Rory Stewart hasn’t had enough of embarrassing himself on X clearly. After this shocker…
He has now decided to take on JD Vance by calling into question his theological articulation of the ordo amoris (the order in which we are to love people and things) as applied to the nation state in a TV interview. See below:
That is a savage burn that will not heal quickly.
The fact is that Vance is 100% correct here. The Christian articulation of this issue is not that we only care about those close to us - and indeed Christ does teach a universal love of mankind - but we nevertheless have an obligation to those who are closest to us. In my case it would be my wife and my children, and then my wider family. I am also obliged to care about and serve and look out for the interests of the parish church of which I am the priest more than I do other parish churches. And I could probably name some other things.
It would not be unchristian - in fact it would be deeply unChristian - for me to say that I prioritise my wife to the same extent that I prioritise every other woman.
The strength of Vance’s argument comes in the fact that he exposes the immorality of the globalist elite who - as he rightly says - seem to have it exactly the wrong way around: they despise their own countrymen and work against their interests in the interests of others who are far away and should not have the same level of priority. The reason that so many people hate Trump is because he calls this globalist ideology into question and says unambiguously, “America first”. And, incidentally, the reason that the left is having its bottom handed to it across much of the Western World is because swathes of ordinary people, the demos, have had enough of it and are voting for people who are going to prioritise their interests.
I’m not saying anything about Trump’s theological convictions but saying “America first” is no more unChristian than saying “my wife and my children first”. As Vance notes, this is also just common sense - the kind of common sense absent to misguided elites like Rory Stewart.
Stewart and his kind are exactly the reason we are in the deep s**t we now find ourselves the arrogant stupid luxury belief class and it has nothing to do with Christianity
Pretty depressing that this Rory is even known by anyone outside his extended family. He should be managing the accounts at a plumbing supplier somewhere.
